Some of you may be here after reading this conversation over at Olyforums. A guy who goes by the name of security_six is upset about Jeff’s disclaimer at the head of his post concerning Facebook use during council meetings. There aren’t any posts here by Mr. Six, because I “unapproved” them until he registers with his real name.
Mr. Six, please don’t look for a hidden motive here. There is none. I just made a mistake when I approved your comment absent your real name. It has nothing to do with the content of your comment. The rest of the interweb is anonymous. This tiny little spot is not. That’s all there is to it. Nothing more.
And, I’ll take your bet about the lawyer advising Jeff to reel back his insult of Mr. Reeves. No such warning came from our attorney. I can’t prove it, of course. I can’t even swear under oath that Jeff and our attorney didn’t have a private conversation about it. But, I can tell you the lawyer hasn’t warned me off about scolding Mr. Reeves, which I’ve done in council session.

My apologies, I didn’t catch the need to have a “real” name as a username here. Needless to say I am security_six.
I appreciate your goal to have “real” names here, but sadly on the internets that is too easy to fake.
Regarding the bet since you can’t prove an attorney conversation and I cant’ prove you can’t prove it, I’ll split the difference and provide two bottles of Fish’s Hard Cider. One for Jeff, one for Rhenda.
My opinion on the lameness of Jeff’s disclaimer still stands though. It’s suspicious and serves to raise questions where none should be raised. Maybe I’m a bit quick to jump on something, but seeing this from a public official raised my eyebrows.
In the end it really wont’ stop people from copying and pasting for discussion elsewhere, but it does cause myself and others to question why an elected official would try to shield his statements, even on a semi private forum like this blog with such an unenforceable disclaimer.

I will make you guys a special offer. If you would like to have discussions on OlyForums, I can do something Olyblog can’t. I can ensure 100% non anonymous conversations there through a special forum. Something to think about.

Well, I’m trying to ensure 100% non-anonymous conversation here. That’s the whole point. I’m letting people get by with first names for the world, but I must know the last name. I think it will civilize discussions. We’ll see. This is an experiment.
Jeff’s disclaimer isn’t lame. He’s not trying to control the discussion, he just wants to know who’s in the conversation. If it goes off to another site where he won’t respond he’s not a part of it anymore.

Jeff’s refusal to discuss things elsewhere is not my concern. My concern is a public official attempting to hijack the efforts of people to quote his own words and discuss them elsewhere.
Ya know, the tinfoil hat crowd in Olympia will find it interesting you demand the full names of people who post on your site :-p I can see the Olyblog conspiracies now….
I don’t think you will get 100% non anonymous conversation, it’s a noble goal but given the nature of the internet is build on a weak foundation. I could have easily registered as Frank Jones, or Jennifer Young, or any other made up name. Plus it may have the effect I believe of stifling dissent, especially given the fact you are both public officials who are in essence, collecting a list of people who post here.
If I hadn’t already had some dealings with city government, I would be very uncomfortable giving my full name in a private area like this to a pair of elected officials who are this wound up over knowing who people are…

Who are the tinfoil hat crowd? Did I miss something. Steve…I don’t really know you, but I need to let you know I don’t drink hard cider! But I would take a soda!
AND…I am interested in further discussion regarding “open carry”. Genuinely. Civil rights and all being a biggie with me.
I would happily have a conversation with you, by the way, about ANY topic.

Oh, regarding the tinfoil hat crowd, I’m not going to list names, but I’m thinking conspiracy theorists, and other weirdos who see or invent issues… The same kind of people who think 9-11 was an inside job…
